    Speaker & Lecture Information

    [Brief Introduction of Seminar]

In this presentation, we will introduce our recent advances in biodegradable microneedle array patch (MAP) technologies for transdermal drug delivery and biosensing applications. We have developed novel fabrication strategies for biodegradable MAPs capable of delivering recombinant vaccinia virus vectors expressing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein (rDIs-S) and DENV2C-NS25 (rDIs-DENV2C), demonstrating their potential as next-generation vaccine platforms.

In addition, we have developed porous microneedle-based biosensing platforms that enable the direct integration of sensing elements with paper-based analytical devices. This platform enables rapid, minimally invasive sampling of interstitial fluid (ISF) and electrochemical detection of biomarkers within minutes. Collectively, these technologies expand the functionality of microneedles beyond conventional transdermal drug delivery, providing a versatile platform for continuous health monitoring and point-of-care diagnostics.

    [Brief Introduction of Speaker]

Beomjoon Kim is a Professor at the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS), The University of Tokyo, Japan. He currently serves as Director of LIMMS-KIKO and Director of the Center for Research on Engineering in Medicine and Biology (CREMeB) at IIS. He received his B.E. in Mechanical Design and Production Engineering from Seoul National University, Korea, in 1993, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Precision Engineering from The University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1995 and 1998, respectively.

He was a CNRS Associate Researcher at LPMO in Besançon, France, and a Researcher at the MESA+ Research Institute, University of Twente, the Netherlands, from 1998 to 2000. He joined The University of Tokyo in 2000 as an Associate Professor and has been serving as a Professor since 2013. He also served as Co-Director of the CIRMM/CNRS Paris Office from 2001 to 2003.

His research focuses on biosensors for portable point-of-care diagnostics, self-powered energy-harvestig microsensors, smart monitoring systems, and dissolvable microneedle-based transdermal drug delivery systems. In recent years, he has concentrated on the development of next-generation transdermal drug delivery technologies using dissolvable microneedle patches.

To date, he has authored 134 peer-reviewed journal articles, 278 international conference papers, 237 domestic conference papers, and numerous patents and book publications.
